Altitude Editions is a small publishing imprint based in London. It takes its name from the Altitude Award, created by Maud Sulter to honor the achievements of Black women artists. Our first book is Maud Sulter: Passion, 2015.
Maud Sulter (1960-2008) was an internationally-renowned artist and writer of Scottish and Ghanaian heritage whose dramatic and sensuous photographs decisively put Black women back in the centre of the frame.
MAUD SULTER: PASSION brings together works from the artist’s major series: Zabat, Hysteria, Sphinx, Syrcas and Les Bijoux. Many have not been seen since they were first exhibited in the 1980s and 1990s. This lavishly illustrated volume illuminates the artist’s working methods and her approaches to different media from studio photography to photomontage. It includes a selection of her poems and prose poems, and a revealing conversation with Mark Haworth-Booth, a leading curator of photography.
