MAUD SULTER: PASSION
Maud Sulter (1960-2008) was an internationally-renowned artist and writer of Scottish and Ghanaian heritage whose dramatic and sensuous photographs decisively put Black women back in the centre of the frame.
MAUD SULTER: PASSION is the first publication on this artist and writer. It brings together works from her major series: Zabat, Hysteria, Sphinx, Syrcas and Les Bijoux.
Many have not been seen since they were first exhibited in the 1980s and 1990s. This lavishly illustrated book is th illuminates the artist’s working methods and her approaches to different media from studio photography to photomontage.
It includes a selection of her poems and prose poems, interlaid alongside the images
and series to which they relate. A conversation with Mark Haworth-Booth, a leading curator of photography who purchased her work for the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, reflects on her practice, writers and artists who inspire her and the making of
Zabat, Hysteria, and Sphinx.
